11:30-13:00: The University’s Research Ethics Procedures

This session will provide an update on the university’s research ethics procedures, both for research degree students and for staff research projects. After a brief introduction, there will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions and discuss the ways in which the university makes decisions about ethical approval for research projects.

13:00-13:30: lunch

13:30-16:00: Research Integrity: What is it and why do I need to know about it? Dr. Andrew C. Rawnsley.

This session will introduce you to research integrity, what it is and how it differs from, but relates to, ethical review of research. Research integrity is a critical part of every academic’s work and this session will give you the opportunity to learn about and discuss its relevance to your discipline area; how it plays a part in your academic life, whether as a student, supervisor, or researcher; and how it is currently being manifested by key organisations including funders, HE policy bodies, and advisory bodies such as the UK Research Integrity Office and the Association for Research Ethics. The session will give an overview of the context of research integrity in the UK; provide information, sources of guidance and advice; tackle important areas such as data, authorship and publication; and explore examples and case materials illustrating the major topics and issues through discussion. It is suitable for all academic staff, support staff involved with the administration of research, postgraduate and research students and post-doctoral researchers of any discipline.

Biography: Dr. Andrew C. Rawnsley serves on the Executive Committee, UK Council for Graduate Education (UKCGE); the University Development Group, Association for Research Ethics (AfRE) and is an advisor for the UK Research Integrity Office (UKRIO). He is currently Research Governance and Training Manager at Teesside University. He undertakes frequent consultancy on research integrity for a range of universities and is a co-author of Epigeum’s “Research Integrity” international online training programme, along with four US-based authors. Andrew’s academic background is in philosophy and theology, with particular interests in moral philosophy and aesthetics. Prior to academia, Andrew worked in music publishing.
